Bahrain: Burt must see that the 'tolerance' is just for show

The King of Bahrain was in Britain last week while Alistair Burt, the responsible Foreign Minister, made a reciprocal visit to this desert island of 1.2million in the Gulf off Saudi Arabia.  I hope Mr Burt who is an evangelical Christian, spoke up for more than 'tolerance'.

Watching BBC World TV’s trailer for its current affairs strand Hard Talk where I’m staying in Amman, Jordan tonight, and cringeing at how weird and out of touch the BBC’s world is

Grayson Perry, the transvestite potter is tonight’s subject.  Hard Talk wants to find out ‘how a transvestite potter has talked the British Museum into exhibiting his work’, meaning oceans of air-time commenting on and explaining a perversion that used to be considered too extreme even for policemen to discuss with me, when I was a young reporter.

The finest – and first – free press in the world has become a tragic and bawdy farce.  The upshot of the Leveson inquiry will be some form of press regulation.  As the Guardian points out today, if Leveson calls for the Portuguese police to divulge the name of the journalist to whom it gave a copy of the translation of Madeleine McCann’s diary, which he has the power to do under  the terms of the inquiry, that is regulation.
